College Visits, Workshops Boost Family Engagement

The 2022-23 school year is off to a great start for GEAR UP 4 LA families, who have hit the ground running by participating in several weekend activities to enhance their college, career and financial literacy knowledge.

Parent Ambassadors expanded their knowledge of the four systems of higher education while experiencing college life as UCLA students. Through hands-on activities, families explored potential career pathways in emergency health care and forensics from professionals at East Los Angeles College.

Families also had the opportunity to participate in an immersive simulation hosted by Junior Achievement at Finance Park, where they learned how to manage their finances and make decisions.

To ensure they have the information necessary to support their student’s success, parents also participated in a virtual workshop to go over high school graduation requirements, financial aid, the importance of GPAs and more.

“Parent participation is a vital piece to student success,” GU4LA Family Engagement Specialist Frida Samayoa said. “The earlier we provide them with college and career information and expose them to opportunities, the better equipped they are to support their student’s journey.”
