Families Learn Hands-on about ELAC CTE Pathways

To help expose students and their parents to potential career pathways and opportunities available at local community colleges, GEAR UP 4 LA recently took families to East Los Angeles College, where they engaged in hands-on activities with professionals by their side guiding their learning and answering questions.

During the trip, GEAR UP families explored ELAC’s career technical education pathways – Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and Forensics Crime Scene Investigation.

“We had the opportunity to learn first-hand about first aid and it’s been a great experience because they explained the process and the types of certificates students and young adults can earn to succeed academically in college and beyond.”

Parents and their students paired up to learn how to administer life-saving CPR on a mannequin and analyzed each other’s fingerprints, critical to connecting a suspect to a crime. They also were able to take a mini tour of an ambulance onsite and ask questions of a first responder.

To help strengthen their knowledge of postsecondary opportunities, parents and their children also learned about the four systems of higher education, services offered at the community college and the types of non-credit adult classes available to the public.
