Januari Penman earned a bachelor’s in communications studies from Cal State Northridge. She holds two master’s and attended National University and the University of Southern California for her teaching, counseling, and administrative credentials.

“I love that GEAR UP provides equity and access to the college pathway for students early on. As a former college counselor, it brings me joy to work with a program that fosters the path to higher education and lifelong learning.”

Sandra Cruz is a first-generation student who graduated from Franklin High School. She holds a bachelor’s in child development from Cal State L.A. and a master’s in school counseling from Concordia University.

“I love making connections with students so that they can build trust and establish a rapport with us. It is a privilege to help students realize their potential. Walking with them throughout their journey to achieve their dreams is very rewarding.”

Kira McLean, who graduated from UCLA with a bachelor’s in psychology and a minor in education studies, is pursuing a master’s in school counseling from USC.

“I am so happy to have the opportunity to work with GEAR UP and encourage underserved youth with similar backgrounds to my own in pursuing higher education!”

Karen previously worked with GEAR UP though Occidental College as a tutor and college advisor.  She grew up in LA and is a proud graduate of LAUSD and received her B.A. in Sociology and a minor in Education from Occidental College.

“I’m excited to return to working with students and supporting them and their families as they prepare for college and life after high school. Working with students and families brings a lot of joy to my heart and I’m grateful for the opportunity to get to do this work.”
