Januari Penman earned a bachelor’s in communications studies from Cal State Northridge. She holds two master’s and attended National University and the University of Southern California for her teaching, counseling, and administrative credentials.

“I love that GEAR UP provides equity and access to the college pathway for students early on. As a former college counselor, it brings me joy to work with a program that fosters the path to higher education and lifelong learning.”

Sandra Cruz is a first-generation student who graduated from Franklin High School. She holds a bachelor’s in child development from Cal State L.A. and a master’s in school counseling from Concordia University.

“I love making connections with students so that they can build trust and establish a rapport with us. It is a privilege to help students realize their potential. Walking with them throughout their journey to achieve their dreams is very rewarding.”

Genesis Sic is a GEAR UP alumna who holds a bachelor’s in sociology from UC Santa Cruz and is working toward a master’s in human development from Pacific Oaks College.

“I have always associated GEAR UP with individuals who are kind, respectful, passionate, and wholeheartedly care and support students and their families. Becoming an academic advisor was a no-brainer.”

Jessica Hernandez attended Union Avenue Elementary School, Virgil Middle School, and Miguel Contreras Learning Complex. She also attended L.A. Trade Tech for visual communications and Santa Monica College for photography.

“I joined GEAR UP to help my community and provide students and parents with all the resources necessary to ensure they have a path toward a better education. I love what GEAR UP does for families and students and I am so grateful to have joined this team.”
