Huntington Park High School / Magnet

Daisy Alvizo attended San Gabriel Elementary, South Gate Middle, and South Gate High schools. She earned a bachelor’s in social science from UC Irvine, a teaching credential from Cal State Long Beach, and a master’s degree and administrative credential from Cal State Northridge.

“I love that GEAR UP gives me the opportunity to help students through their childhood journey, from kids to early adulthood. I look forward to helping students realize their full potential and fulfill their dream of pursuing a college education.”

Norma Sánchez, who grew up in Boyle Heights and Maywood, graduated from Cal State L.A. with a bachelor’s in social work and a multiple-subject teaching credential. She holds a master’s in school-based marriage and family therapy.

“As a teacher, I worked as hard as I could to make a difference in youngsters’ lives. I enjoyed seeing the results. As a GEAR UP counselor, I can continue that same work in a more thorough manner. Mental wellness is as important as academic achievement.”

Guendi Ball-Whitfield holds a bachelor’s in sociology, deviance, and social control from Cal State Long Beach.

“I enjoy when parents learn that their children have the opportunity to go to college regardless of economic and legal status.”

Kimberly Martínez grew up in Huntington Park, attending Miles Avenue Elementary, Gage Middle, and Huntington Park high schools. She graduated from UC Merced.

“I love my team! Being able to support our students and share that with the community we love makes what we do worth it.”
