Adetutu “Tutu” Ajileye, who started with L.A. Unified as a special education classroom assistant in 1999 and became a classroom teacher in 2001, holds a bachelor’s in history and a master’s in special education and administrative credentials from National University.

“I joined the GEAR UP program because I strongly believe that everyone is educable regardless of their background. Moreover, every child has a story to tell and I want to be a part of that story.”

Marta Palomo – who has been with Los Angeles Unified since 2001 and became a school counselor in 2006 – was born in Los Angeles to parents from El Salvador. She attended and graduated from East Los Angeles College, Cal State Los Angeles and Cal State Northridge.

“Growing up as a child of immigrants, school was always a challenge. My own struggles with navigating the public education system and being able to work with students, who have parallel stories as me, were what motivated me to become a school counselor and to work with organizations such as GEAR UP 4 LA.”

Ruben Olivas is a first-generation college graduate who holds an associate’s degree in administration of justice from Los Angeles Mission College and a bachelor’s in criminal justice from Cal State L.A.

“Counseling has been my passion, and helping kids who face similar issues I did provides me with true fulfillment. I look forward to being a part of GEAR UP and assisting students to achieve their educational goals and answering any and every question they may have as they embark onto their professional careers.”

Martha Secundino holds a bachelor’s in Chicano Studies and a minor in education and labor and work studies from UCLA, where she served as an academic advisor for its Early Academic Outreach Program (EAOP).

“As a first-generation student myself, I value and understand the importance of GEAR UP, counselors, site coordinators and academic advisors. I am very excited to bring support to our students and families but also collaborate with the GEAR UP team.”

George graduated from Cal State Northridge with my bachelors degree in sociology.  He is excited to be joining GEAR UP and happy to assist with any questions!

I come with a background in advising and counseling working for non-profit organizations, and I hope to be able to add to this already great team of individuals.

Jacqueline graduated from UCLA where she obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology.

I am excited to embark on this new opportunity and hope to be of assistance to all and add to a great team of individuals!

Miriam Inzunza is a GEAR UP mom whose child joined the program in 2011. During her time, Miriam learned about higher education, financial aid options, and the opportunities available to her child.

“I was and I am very blessed. I’m always encouraging parents to continue supporting their children. We at GEAR UP will always be there to help them.”
