GEAR UP 4 LA Goes to Washington

Ella Turenne and Jesus Maldonado from Occidental College and Frida Samayoa, GEAR UP 4 LA Parent Coordinator, visit Congressman Xavier Becerra's office in Washington, D.C. to present the case for continued support for GEAR UP programs.

In July, GEAR UP 4 LA visited the Capitol Hill office of Representative Becerra from Los Angeles’s 34th District. Here’s what Parent and Community Involvement Coordinator, Frida Samayoa, had to say about the experience.

“It was the best opportunity that I have ever had because it was the chance to be a voice for the 4,000 families we represent. I would do it again, at every opportunity, because it’s important that those who might otherwise only see GEAR UP as a financial consideration hear how this funding benefits all the parents, the kids, and the community.”

Congressman Becerra must be very busy, but I don’t want him to forget how much the students benefit from this program. GEAR UP makes a difference for the kids. I wish all parents were there and I felt very proud to represent them. It’s important to keep insisting: don’t forget the students, the families, and all the parents who want to reach the dream of seeing their children graduate from college.
